St Andrews Primary School students of Nadi yesterday received firsthand experience on hotel service from the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa staff.

This was after the school hosted a careers expo which was an eye opener to the students.

School headteacher Anasa Vateitei said that the event was a great opportunity for the school.

“We believe that we have careers day only for secondary schools but if they start at a young age to decide what they want to become in the future, it will help a lot,” Mr Vateitei said.

He said the expo was a proud initiative of the resort and the school.

“When Sofitel Fiji Resort adopted the school we had to find ways to assist each other, so they have refurbished the school in painting and other things.

“So we decided to bring the hotel services here to the school so children can experience this,” he said.

He said most of the student’s parents would be working at Denarau but they have not been there, so the event would have given the students some experience that they will take along with them.

Resort Training Administrator, Nicola Hoyte said that the event was basically held for the children to have an open mind to what they would want to become in the future.

“Well we are doing this for the kids because of the partnership we have with the school.

“It is also important to the children in terms of exposure to what they will expect in the tourism industry,” she said.

The students were exposed to six departments including landscaping and flower arrangements.
