Perhaps the only mobile company not necessarily competing with the larger companies on price tag and high-end is Alcatel OneTouch.

However, you can bet your bottom dollar that its devices are just as durable as any $1000 phones on the market.

This week we present to you the Alcatel Pop S3 and its big brother or sister (whatever makes you happy!) the Alcatel Pop S9. Thanks to Vodafone Fiji we were able to have a hands-on trial.

At first glance both phones put together are somewhat like toys, what with its plasticy-look. But DO NOT I repeat DO NOT let looks deceive you because more than often, there is more that meets the eye.

Alcatel Pop S3

Fancy a smartphone that you can change colours anytime to your mood or outfit? Well the Alcatel Pop S3 will give you that.

It’s the lowest end device of the Pop S range at $299, with five colorful interchangeable rear covers and has LTE for fast download speeds.

It’s easy to change the rear covers, unlike other smartphones where you would have to pull a tooth and nail (if this doesn’t sound too dramatic) to do so.

The Android smartphone is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, which is, to enough knowledge of my own, quite adequate. Only one who’s had at least some time at bonding with the device and others would tell you.

Like other accessories, Alcatel’s back covers are available for purchase online from various accessories vendors.

Alcatel Pop S9

Online reviews suggest that the device boasts a huge screen at a ‘smart price’. The Alcatel Pop S9 stands firmly in the phablet phone category at no less than 5.9 inches of space to fiddle with. She goes for $529 at Vodafone retail stores.

Like the Pop S9, the rear cover too is also available at online accessories shops but my guess is with limited colours.

The Pop S9 is 182 grams while the S3 is 130 grams. On the back of the Alcatel OneTouch POP S9 resides an 8MP camera with auto-focus and an LED light. The camera app can be quickly accessed from the lock screen thanks to a shortcut placed there, which is nice.

In terms of battery life, for both phones you should be able to get more hours of usage out of this phone if you’re not using it on a network but what’s the use if you’re not going to use it anyway!

And for the same OneTouch concept have evolved over the years. From the conventional Alcatel OneTouch E201 to the square flip Alcatel OT-808 both the Pop S3 and S9 are a definite step up.

From the former obvious sounds of keypads, you can now have a more smooth and gliding search of the phone with literally just a touch!

While both devices tick most boxes in terms of audio, the Alcatel could at least have done a little better.

However, both devices are 4G enabled and backward compatible on 3G & 2G networks.

My suggestion is that if you want a sleek and budget smartphone, go to the nearest Vodafone outlet and get your hands one of each (if you like!). They’re worth the budget penny you’ve got.
