The touring 72-member contingent from St Mary’s Rugby League Club from Sydney has praised the enthusiasm of local players

This was after St Mary’s Under-13 side edged out Lautoka Under-14 12-10 at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Tuesday.

This is the club’s 15th tour to Fiji and it has become a culture for them to tour Fiji annually where they learn to interact with Fijian players.

Club’s president, Warren Smith said the enthusiasm and dedication of Fijian players are something to praise about.

“They have a lot of skills and for us to come down every year, gives us an opportunity to see how they play,” he said.

“Not only this tour is a great learning experience for our players but we also try to give back to the community in any way possible.

The club donated a full set of rugby jerseys to the Lautoka team as well as training t-shirts and other sporting equipment.

Smith said he would be looking forward to scout some young players in the future.

“There are a number of Fijian players in the NRL and they have done very well.”

He said Fiji needs assistance in the technical aspect to develop good rugby league players.

“Everyone in Australia are now taking notice of Fijian players and provided the right guidance, these untapped local players will have a great career ahead.

“We have had a great relationship with Fiji National Rugby League and we thank them for their support,” he added.
