The United States’ secretary of state, John Kerry, has sent congratulations and best wishes to the people of Fiji on the 44th anniversary of the nation’s independence this October 10.

He said the US valued its relationship with Fiji.

“Our citizens share a mutual commitment to democracy, freedom, and rule of law,” Mr Kerry said.

“We commend the recent successful elections in Fiji and look forward to continuing to build and strengthen our friendship as we work together to promote peace, security, and economic development.”

He said as Fijians celebrated this special day, they should know that they had the support of the American people.

“We stand by you as you continue to build a freer and more democratic society. Best wishes for a year filled with peace, progress and prosperity.”
