Villagers of Sawaieke in Gau, Lomaiviti, residing in Suva and the Western Division gathered at the Ratu Sukuna Memorial School in Suva yesterday to celebrate Sawaieke Day.

Village treasurer Poasa Raivou said they had gathered to raise funds for development projects in the village.

“There are some things in the village that needs the assistance from those of us working in the urban centres,” Mr Raivou said. He said there are a lot of things that needs to be developed which includes refurbishment of their church and construction of a village hall.

Also to assist families whose children are attending higher education, and help start up small businesses for their women.

He said there was also a need to buy solar system equipment for the village.

Despite not hitting their target, Mr Raivou said they were able to raise $17,648.

“We were supposed to raise $2000 each from the 23 mataqali and anticipated raising $40,000 but we couldn’t achieve it.

“Despite that we are very appreciative of the efforts shown by the villagers who were able to make it to the event,” Mr Raivou said.

The entire day was filled with a lot of merry-making and laughter.
