Former Vodafone Fiji Bati coach Joe Rabele said yesterday Hayne’s departure is going to be a big loss for NRL.

“But again that’s Jarryd’s future and the welfare of his family always come first,” he said.

“This year my workmate (development officer) Sonny Blake was hinting that Jarryd might make the switch. This was based on the interest shown to him by the American Football clubs and the fact they had invited him over several times. But we did not know that it was going to be this fast.”

Rabele said all the off season training and weights programme adopted by NRL clubs are all taken from NFL.

“I believe that Jarryd will do well and I’m happy that he is going to earn more compared to what he was getting at NRL.”

A young Hayne ran into trouble and was dropped from the Australian Kangaroos during the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He joined the Bati and was under Rabele’s care. Hayne redeemed himself at the World Cup as they reached the semifinals and hailed Rabele as the man who saved his life.
