The town of Ba will be expecting new changes soon from the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.

Rosy Akbar has proposed a new senior citizens centre in the town.

“The senior citizens have contributed a lot towards nation building and my ministry will do everything in its powers to look after their welfare and wellbeing.

“We will explore the idea of relocating this centre so that you all have a more spacious and comfortable place to meet,” she said.

She said the ministry is currently reviewing the existing policies and is looking at ways to improve the standard of living.

“We will also look at ways to expand our assistance to the senior citizens in Fiji,” Ms Akbar said.

Senior Citizens Ba Community Centre president Davendra Naidu said they were looking forward to a strengthened partnership with the ministry.

“The contributions of the senior citizens need to be recognised. They have worked hard all their lives to bring Fiji to where it is.

“It is good news that the senior citizens are getting the Social Pension Scheme and that is going to be increased to a $50 monthly pension from next year. We thank you for this and for remembering the seniors in the West,” Mr Naidu said.

The ministry is currently assisting a total of 11,079 senior citizens through the Social Pension Scheme (SPS) and a total of 40,274 senior citizens and 1562 people living with disabilities through the Government’s Bus Fare Concession. The SPS has a budgetary allocation of $3million.
