A national conference on aligning curriculum to development needs gets underway at the Lautoka campus of the Fiji National University today.

The Minister for Education, Dr Mahendra Reddy, will also launch ‘Special Issue of Fijian Studies’, on issues in education in Fiji at the conference.

The acting head of school – Education, Hem Chand, said through the conference, they intend to reflect on issues facing our education system at the moment.

“Fiji has gone through a lot in the last forty years and the time is right to be re-examining our educational and national goals.

“It is a collective task. As a centre of learning our responsibility is to stimulate discussion, but we need all the stakeholders present here and other citizens to carry on the deliberations till we find appropriate answers as we do not have the monopoly over solutions to problems.”

The conference will look at gathering research papers for policy makers to ensure the Fijian education system gets in line with international standards.

When Dr Reddy took office after elections, acknowledged that there was a need to relook at the Fijian education system.

Changes to examinations students sit are also expected to be introduced in the next school year.
