An enthusiastic contender, Walt Smith International Limited is an entrant in the 2014 Westpac Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards announced this Saturday.

The company specialising in exporting various marine life using sophisticated methods of aquaculture through research and development has applied under four categories.

These are:

– Golden Manufacturers Ltd Manufacturing Exporter of the Year Award,

– Hangton Pacific Company Ltd Fisheries Exporter of the Year Award.

– Technix Bitumen Pacific Ltd Emerging Exporter of the Year Award

– Home Finance Company Ltd (HFC) Large Exporter of the Year Award.

Founder Walt Smith stated since the establishment of the Lautoka company in 1995 the main focus has been towards a 100 per cent exporting venture.

It has grown from strength to strength and this year noted 15 per cent increased exports compared to last year’s. It exports its products to 27 countries around the world.

Mr Smith said the positive result was enabled through innovative strategies they are undergoing.

These strategies are very simple as they have maintained a top quality control, always a range of new products to offer and bringing the Fiji brand to the world, he said.

“We have as unique opportunity to showcase Fiji and we make the most of it by attending worldwide trade shows and international advertising,” Mr Smith said.

The company was given licence to market its products under the Fijian Made-Buy Fijian campaign recently.

Mr Smith believed they deserve an award because of the commitment they had shown through the increase in the exports.

This is due to their continued support of their new branch in the Northern Division, he added.

“Since 2011 the Northern Division was a successful venture and adds a new dimension to our companies commitment to the Fiji people.”

Unique products

Walt Smith has provided a range of unique products to the export market. This is made possible through the re-design of an original product of 1998.

“In February of this year we had a complete re-design of this product and introduced it at a trade show in Germany.

“The new product exceeded our expectations and has required an additional 14 staff to keep up with the new demands.”

Mr Smith hopes for the best at the awards. He has been planning and working towards new things for the Walt Smith.

Remaining challenges are bureaucracies within Government agencies which the Bainimarma Government is working hard to ease. Airline routing is also a challenge but they have noticed more routes opening up recently.

The awards will be held at the Sofitel Resort & Spa in Denarau.
