Five memorandums of understanding are expected to be signed between Fiji and China following bilateral talks between the two countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived into the country last night with a strong delegation fo r his Fiji state visit.

He was received by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Government ministers at Nadi International Airport.

The memorandums of understanding to be signed at Denarau,  Nadi, during the visit  are expected to  cover the following:

– Visa exemption: All Fijians exc-ept Cabinet ministers and senior Government officials will soon be allowed to travel to China without any visa. A visa exemption MOU is expected to be signed between the two countries. The exception is because of the security needs of ministers and other senior Government officials for which the Chinese government needs to be notified before their arrival.

– Climate change equipment: The second MOU is expected to be on China donating equipment which would be used to address climate change.

– Cultural centre: A Chinese Cultural Centre will also be built in Fiji and an MOU on this is expected to also be signed.

– Sporting complex: China is expected to fund the construction of a sporting complex in Fiji.

A letter of exchange on the sporting complex to be built by the Chinese government will be facilitated.

– Technical co-operation: An MoU on continuing technical co-operation with China is also expected to  be signed.

The signing of these MOUs is another step towards the strengthening of relations between Fiji and China.

Earlier this month talks were held in China between the Fijian Embassy and the Chinese government on plans to have more direct flights. Further talks on this are also expected.

Today the Chinese Head of State will be holding bilateral meetings at the Sheraton Fiji  on Denarau with other Pacific island leaders here for the meetings hosted by Fiji.
