Words of encouragement and praises were echoed by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation for Soroptimist International Fiji.

Rosy Akbar applauded the organisation for their efforts to empower and transform the lives our women and girls. She also applauded the seven member clubs under the global volunteer movement during their annual awards night at Fun World Plaza Hotel in Nadi last Saturday.

“The promise of SI to promote development of women, improve the standards of living of women and girls and education are all aligned to the daily needs of our society,” Ms Akbar said.

She said it was an encouragement to develop our people and the gathering marked a clear indication of their allegiance.

“Staging an awards night provides a conduit to keep the fire burning in our hearts as we socially elevate the welfare of our communities,” the minister said.

“This cross links to my Ministry as we move to empower women and the disadvantaged and augurs well with my Ministry’s initiative to move from Welfare to Workfare and I must congratulate SI for taking the lead.”

She assured the members present that the Government provided encouragement to groups and individuals to enter income generating projects not only to equip but empower our women.

“Poverty alleviation will be implemented robustly by our Government in an all inclusive and no past Governments made a real difference to national poverty levels.”

But with the Bainimarama Government, she said it was possible because the Government would project a buoyant economic outlook for our nation.
