Tourism Minister Faiyaz Koya had a few quick words for critics of the $12 million used in organising the recent Fiji International Golf tournament at Natadola Bay Golf Course.

He said the $12 million spent was minimal compared to the benefits in international media coverage, business for local caterers and confidence in the local economy.

Former hotel executive and tourism industry stalwart Bill Gavoka had questioned the rationale of using millions of taxpayers money on this event. He said there were residents near Natadola who still did not have an adequate water supply, making the use of this money questionable.

Mr Koya, who is also the Minister responsible for Industry and Trade said they would be pressing on for a bigger and better tournament in 2015.

Mr Gavoka focused his budgetary response on the tourism sector insisting traditional markets needed to be maintained for tourists. He said Australian and New Zealanders were high-yield tourists who spent more per tourist on average that tourists from Asia.

He insisted the one-million mark for tourists to Fiji was possible with smart marketing efforts and a bipartisan approach to helping the tourism industry.
