In their mission to keep young people occupied during the festive season, Raiwai Raiders Rugby League Club officials are working hard to stage a Nines tournament at Kauvesi Park on Saturday.

The will be the first Series of the Inter Lane Rugby League Nines tournament.

Raiwai Youth Community Council secretary Josefa Nasilasila said yesterday they are appealing to the business community in the area to assist them in form of sponsorship to help kick start the Series.

“We came up with this initiative after the Fiji National Rugby League cancelled the Nines tournament in Sigatoka, which was to happen this Saturday,” he said.

“We did not want to let the boys downs so we the officials discussed it and came up with this plan to stage a weekly tournament.”

Fiji Police Force youth co-ordinator Southern Senior Inspector Ravu Dansey said they are committed to the development of their youths.

“Right now the crime rate is Raiwai is really low so we want to keep it there. It was unfortunate that FNRL had cancelled the tournament but we’ve come up with this idea to keep our boys occupied.”

Dansey pointed out they are also looking at building-up the relationship between the business sector and the people of Raiwai.

“We will invite the bosses of the companies that come to sponsor us to be at the ground to hand out the prizes to the winning teams and for them to know the officials and players as well.”
