Fijian teachers working in Tuvalu have been highly praised by Tuvalu Prime Minister, Enele Sopoaga, for raising the standard of education in the island nation.

Mr Sopoaga and acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding for further cooperation. This will see more teachers leaving for Tuvalu through the National Employment Centre.

Tuvalu is one of the six countries where Fijian teachers are posted.

Mr Sopoaga said at one of their outer islands, the pass rate was 20 per cent. A Fijian couple posted there managed to raise the pass rate to 80 per cent within a few years of their posting.

He said the dedication and work ethics of Fijian teachers were commendable.

“The benefits of the scheme are already being realised in Tuvalu. Already I am receiving very positive reports from my communities to say that the teachers are doing a very good job.

“They are matured, experienced and they are bringing in new blood and motivation to the classrooms, helping the students especially in the areas of English and Mathematics.”

Mr Sopoaga said Fiji has been a ‘big brother’ and has helped Tuvalu in many ways for which they were very thankful.

He also thanked Fiji for facilitating beneficial meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jingping.

“These are manifestations of the care and concern that a big brother like Fiji is continuing to offer small island nations.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said there were a lot of capable Fijians who can contribute to Tuvalu’s development.

“We have a lot of Fijians capable in terms of up- skilling and being able to provide a critical area of service that is of interest to your country. We are here to help and to collaborate with you in other areas you may see fit.”
