It has been suggested to Government at a recent post Budget forum for a Downtown Duty Free Shopping concept for tourists to be implemented in Fiji.

The suggestion was made by businessman and the former president of the Suva Retailers Association, Vinod Gokal.

Mr Gokal said this can be similar to what they have in Australia, New Zealand and other countries.

Some eight to 10 years, Mr Gokal was in the Steering Committee specifically formed to investigate the potential and viability of Downtown Duty Free Shopping.

The Committee comprised of government representatives, representatives of the Retailers Association and other business organisations.

It was resolved that government should implement this scheme and that the necessary mechanics be worked out to bring this into effect.

However, Mr Gokal said for some unknown reasons, the scheme was not implemented.

Opportunity

Given the fact that luxury items will now incur a 32 per cent duty, Mr Gokal said it is imperative and most opportune time for Fiji to tap the tourist dollars by opening up Downtown Duty Free shopping facilities.

“This scheme will cater for all tourists, those visiting Fiji by Air and also those by cruise vessels,” he said.

“Fiji business can thus benefit by millions of dollars in sales to tourists. There will also be a much wider selection of items unlike at the airports.”

Mr Gokal said Government should also make provision for returning Fiji residents to take advantage of the Duty Free Shopping allowing them to shop within say, two days of their return.

“This will prevent residents from spending their dollars overseas and Fiji would be benefitting.”
