Some families living along River Road in Narere had to move to higher ground  yesterday as floodwaters swamped the their homes.

Josateki Suka and his family were asleep when they heard water flowing wildly under their floor.

Mr Suka said they were lucky to wake up sooner before the flood waters rose.

“We were asleep, at around 4am this morning (yesterday) we felt the water on the floor of our house so I woke my wife up and my six children and when we came out the water was up to our neck,” Mr Suka said.

“So my other neighbours came and helped me carry my children and my wife to a nearby church where we are staying in now.”

He said all their furniture and beddings were damaged.

“Our gas stove, washing machine, wardrobe and all our beddings are damaged by just this flood; it can be estimated around $2,500.”

Mr Suka said they waited for the weather to improve before they moved back to their home.

Renuka Devi also of River Road said they were alerted when they heard their neighbours moving around early morning yesterday to save their vehicles.

“I think the water rose quickly from 3- 4am this morning and when I woke up around 5.30am all the neighbours had brought their cars this side and I can see our kitchen and toilet flooded with water.”

Michael Kumar and his family were also among those who fled their homes and seek shelter at a nearby house located on higher ground. Mr Kumar and his family never slept because they were monitoring the rain.

“At 2am we were awake because we had to get everybody together and by then the water has also reached my house,” Mr Kumar said.

“It was also lucky that we did not sleep because we also had children in the house.”

They are pleading for a better drainage system in the area to reduce the risks of flooding.
