Residential areas around Rakiraki have been warned to take extra precaution during this rainy season.

Ra provisional administrator Kelepi Kubunameca has put out a stern warning to the public about water safety.

“On Saturday the whole area of Rakiraki was flooded especially along the Fiji Sugar Corporation flats where we had evacuated 50 people to the Rakiraki Fire Station, two of whom were tourists from Germany.

“The water level was very high but luckily no one got injured during the evacuation,” Mr Kubunameca said.

He said the rain had stopped but the areas were still flooded.

“The rain has stopped so far but because of the rise in water levels I’m advising all motorists to not travel along the Rakiraki corridor.

“Drivers who will be travelling do so at their own risk,” he said.

He has also advised people that they should take precaution and boil all water before drinking.

“Since we have been receiving heavy rainfall people have to start boiling water before they drink.

“At the moment our roads are still closed because of the rise in water level so we are still not sure when it will open,” he said.
