The Ministry of Education isplans to introduc a common curriculum for tertiary and training institutions in the next two years.

This is to allow for standard teaching syllabus for teacher training and could help graduates find employment in the civil service.

“By 2016, it is hoped that all teacher training institutions like the Fiji National University and Corpus Christie will adopt a common education curriculum if they want their graduates to be absorbed by the Ministry of Education,” the ministry’s deputy secretary (professional), Kelera Taloga said in Nadi during the Swami Vivekananda College graduation a fortnight ago.

Ms Taloga outlined some reforms set to take place in schools from next year to strengthen the education system.

“To start with, we will bring back the examinations for Year Six and Year 10 students.

She said from 2015, teachers should complete all the syllabuses by Term Two so that Term three could be spent on structured revision work and remedial classes.

Weekly reports will be collected from schools on the remedial work and students’ evaluation of teachers will be undertaken facilitated by principals and head teachers.”

Other education reforms:

– Changes to the examination and assessment policy from Year Six to Year 10 replacing annual examination with a final examination by the ministry

– A marking guide provided to be used by teachers to mark all examinations except for Years Six, 10, 12 and 13 answer scripts will be marked by appointed examiners by the ministry.

– Year 10 students will have to choose which stream they wish to further their education in whether higher education or be allowed to follow it.

-Specialised infant teachers to for Year One and Two.

“But, these reforms will not be successful without the support of teachers.

“We will need competent teachers to uphold and sustain our education system,” she said.
