Water Authority of Fiji chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai yesterday praised employees who worked long hours to restore supply to Suva, Lami and Nasinu homes and businesses.

He especially mentioned workers who repaired the main water pipe broken by a landslide in the Savura Hills, Colo-i-Suva, during heavy rains the previous week.

He also acknowledged the employees’ families for their support.

“The damage resulted in 112, 000 customers without water over much of the seven days and a major accelerated undertaking by the WAF team to restore the pipes and stabilise the area where the landslide occurred,” Mr Ravai said.

“We have never faced a water crisis anywhere in the country that involved so many people and with no prior warning.”

He said it tested their resolve and resources. He said WAF employees worked overtime and tirelessly to restore supply.

“We organised every resource available to WAF in less than 24 hours to begin the mammoth job of supplying water to the 112,000 customers twice daily.”

He said they had learned valuable lessons on water carting from this crisis but were hopeful that they would not have to be tested again in the future.

Mr Ravai said WAF would begin implementing its 20-year master plan .

“A major effort by WAF this year is to promote water conservation and there is no better example of our vulnerability to the loss of water then what we have experienced this past week,” he said.

He has urged homeowners to consider installing water storage tanks to collect rain water.

“We call it rain water harvesting and it is a simple inexpensive way to store water.”

Mr Ravai said people should conserve water and be aware that water was among their most precious resources and must be used carefully.
