When basic needs are available, people will not easily leave their homes.

The Commissioner Western, Luke Moroivalu, said several Balevuto, Ba sugarcane farmers have returned because of easy access to basic needs.

“So far we have 19 farmers who have returned and have bought back their land twice as much as they had sold it.

“It is one of the biggest sugarcane producing areas. Many have seen the potential in this area and have decided to move back in,” he said.

The area used to supply 180,000 tonnes of sugar but now it is producing only 107,000 tonnes.

“When you put in place basic infrastructure like water, electricity and roads it will complement what people will do for a living whether it be sustainable or commercial,” he said.

Mukesh Chand,50, of Balevuto, thanked Government for the help.

“For 15 years we travel on this road to get water. Now we don’t have to make those unnecessary trips anymore.

“With the new water supply, we will now find less outbreaks and be safe from any disease,” he said.
