Sporting communities in Fiji will need to strengthen their networks and adapt to changes for their advantage.

These were the words of Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) president Reg Sanday during the Nadi Sports Council stakeholders meeting at the Mai Kana Café in Nadi yesterday.

Sanday made this comment following the recent decision where Fiji and other Pacific Island countries to participate in the 2017 Asian Indoor Games. He said international, regional and national sporting structures were starting to change in the 21st century.

“Urban councils are responsible to their residents for the provision and upkeep of sporting facilities.      If each town established a sports council comprising representatives of sporting bodies, communication between individual sports and the council will improve,” he said.

Sanday also said that councils can also play a role in the Fiji Games to be organised by FASANOC at the end of March next year and the inaugural national Youth and Sports Day set by the government on June 26.

“Nadi was one of the powerhouses of sport in Fiji, but in some sports standards had fallen compared with 10 or 20 years ago when Nadi was strong across the board in all sports,” Sanday added.

He said the secret to Nadi’s success was the strength and resolve of its people to give all they got in whatever field they’re involved in.

“The coming together of like-minded people of such calibre to establish a sports umbrella body for the Nadi district that will embrace not only all sports but also the vanua of Nadi can only lead to good things.

“The meeting went very well, people with a record of involvement in sports attended and there was a sense that good things will happen from this initiative,” he said.

The event was chaired by interim chairman Bobby Tikaram and will develop a constitution and a strategy that will be tabled on January 28 at a general meeting of representatives of all sporting bodies in the district and the vanua of Nadi.
