The Fiji Police Force recorded an alarming 668 bookings on overspeeding during the five days from Christmas Eve to Sunday.

Police director traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra said this was alarming and they would focus on this during their New Year’s operation.

“These bookings were made in high risk areas and it indicates that people have been compromising their safety and are not following what we are telling them,” SSP Mishra said.

He confirmed they also made 16 arrests on drivers found drunk and driving while an additional 204 cases were recorded for other road offences.

“We are going to monitor and be vigilant on motorists on our roads and we will also be increasing our presence on the roads during New Years Eve and the New Year,” he said.

“We are reiterating that people take precaution in this wet weather condition and be safe while travelling on our roads.”

Meanwhile, SSP Mishra have thanked the public, especially the pedestrians, for adhering to their road safety warnings.

“Forty-nine people have died on our roads so far this year compared to 41 of last year.

“Keep in mind that this year’s fatalities was from multiple accidents and our concern is also on rural roads but I should say that there is a huge reduction on pedestrians involved in accidents on our roads which is very good,” SSP Mishra said.
