Concert-goers were not disappointed with Fiji-born Australian songbird Paulini Curuenavuli’s efforts at a concert at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Monday night.

One such attendee, 19- year old Broderick Mervyn, came from Nadi to visit family in Suva and took the opportunity to watch Ms Curuenavuli.

“It was good and really exciting. I think she put the house on fire. Before this, I had never really listened to her music but I did follow her during her time on Australian Idol. I just couldn’t pass up this chance to come watch her and meet her,” he said.

Suva lawyer, Ana Tuiketei attended the concert to show her support for the pop diva whom she has known for a few years.

“It was an amazing show and we came to show our support for her as a Fijian who has made a name for herself and her family in Australia. She always pays tribute to her family and Fijian heritage and we’re here to celebrate that with her,” she said.

Suva businesswoman, Elaine Taylor praised the R&B singer’s professionalism and the standard of the concert.

“I’ve been to my fair share of international concerts and I have to say Paulini is right up there with the best of them. I consider myself truly privileged to have paid $30 to sit in the front row and watch someone of her calibre perform live. I thought it was fabulous,” she said.

GPH general manager, Eugene Diethelm echoed similar sentiments and promised more such events to be expected from the hotel in the future.

“I think she is a big star. She has made a name for herself and Fiji. It was a beautiful evening with all the groups that performed and of course Paulini being the highlight. There weren’t that many people which was probably because of the rainy weather.

“But we think that more people will come and we’re sure the next show will be full. It’s a nice event for Suva which we have never had before and it’s also a celebration of the re-opening of the GPH which has a unique place in Suva.

“According to the feedback from the guests, they liked it and we will do it again next year. We will do a lot of shows and we’ll try to bring a lot of different artists to come perform. I believe this is the job of such a hotel in the city to bring groups and singers to perform such shows.”

Curuenavuli performed hits including her debut single Angel Eyes and will deliver her final show tonight as part of New Year’s eve events at the hotel on Victoria Parade.
