Heavy Rain Causes Flash Floods In Labasa

Parts of Labasa experienced flash flooding yesterday as heavy rain pelted parts of the Northern Division.

Labasa Town’s main street, Naseakula Road, Siberia Settlement and nearby areas experienced flash flooding because of the downpour.

One of the drivers who was affected the by flood, Kereleyani Qabale said the drainage system in Labasa Town had to be improved.

“It was frustrating because there was a traffic jam. The flood was caused by poor drainage, Mrs Qabale said.

She called on the council to look into the town’s drainage system.

The same sentiments were echoed by Naseakula resident, Naomi Marama.

She said the drains along Nasekula Road needed a lot of improvement work.

Outside Labasa Town more there 60 students were stuck at Emily Road at Siberia after their school bus could not cross the flooded road.

A bus was also stuck on the other side which also carried passengers and school students who were travelling to Labasa Town.

Siberia resident Okositino Raqitawa said, “We have been waiting here from 1pm but the water is going down slowly.”

Mr Raqitawa said that the drain and the road needed to be improved to stop unnecessary flooding.
