LATEST UPDATE: Senior students from Suva Adventist College yesterday visited Fiji Parliament as part of their Social Science excursion around the capital city.

The group, being the first for locals, were shown around the Parliament Chambers, Government and Opposition offices and the Committee Rooms.

Head of Commerce Mrs Unaisi Drauna said the students were excited about the trip as most of them have not been to Parliament before.

“Most of these students have only seen Parliament on television. Even some of us teachers have not been to Parliament,” Mrs Drauna said.

Form 6 student, Ms Lavenia Rabuatoka was thankful to be part of this Parliament trip.

“I’m so thankful to be here and learn a lot of things about how Parliament operates. This will also help us with our studies and who knows, maybe one of us will become a parliamentarian in future,” Ms Rabuatoka said.

Also present during the visit was Mr Andres Lomp, the Communications and Public Engagement Manager of Parliament of Victoria.

Mr Lomp is attached with the Civic Education and Media Unit of Parliament, as part of the UNDP’s Fiji Parliament Support Project. Mr Lomp’s attachment was supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Pacific Parliamentary Partnerships Programme.

He gave a brief introduction on how Parliament operates and also gave an insight on the role of the Speaker.

Mr Lomp was impressed with the enthusiasm of the students and their eagerness to find out about the work of the Fiji Parliament.

The excursion is part of the curriculum education requirement by the Ministry of Education.
