The Fijian Mission in Malaysia is doing its best to assist the Fijian woman who was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into Kuala Lumpur last week.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Acting Permanent Secretary Esala Nayasi confirmed that officials from the Fijian Mission in Malaysia have been liaising with the detained Fiji citizen and relevant authorities and facilitated her legal representation.

About 1.51 kilograms of Methamphetamine was found on the 26-year-old woman at the Kuala Lumpur Airport two weeks ago while she was travelling from Hong Kong.

He said the Legal Aid Office in Kuala Lumpur would represent the woman when she appears in court

Mr Nayasi said the mission was in contact with the woman’s family here in Fiji and the responsibility of the ministry is to provide consular services for Fijian citizens who seek assistance whilst abroad.

Meanwhile, the woman is being held under Section 39 (B) of Malaysian Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952. Carrying more than 50 grams of methamphetamines, also known as ice, can warrant the death penalty in Malaysia, who with its neighbour Indonesia, have strict anti-drug trafficking laws.
