The new naval base site will be relocated outside Suva, says the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

The Commander of the RFMF, Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, in the presence of the Fiji Navy Commander Captain John Fox, confirmed this to the Fiiji Sun at Sovi Bay, Nadroga, yesterday.

Where exactly will the new naval base be stationed still remains unknown as the Commander said they were looking but could not confirm the areas they were looking at.

Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said the new site identified would be in Viti Levu but outside of Suva.

He was at Sovi Bay yesterday to visit navy divers who were training there since Monday.

Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said they had to relocate the naval base from Walu Bay, Suva, after Government had made its intention to expand the main commercial Port of Suva.

“There are potential areas around Viti Levu that we can use and we are talking to the relevant authorities.”

He is now working on putting together relevant papers to present to the Ministry of Lands to acquire a piece of real estate to start the process of relocating the naval base from Suva to the new site.

“It is good for us to move away from Suva,” Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said.

He said they were at some potential areas and until they confirmed with Government the new site, only then could they make an official announcement.
