The 146 Fijian soldiers redeployed from the Golan Heights to Lebanon arrived at the United Nations Post 2-45 at 2pm Lebanon time on Monday.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Land Force Commander (LFC) Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed this to the Fiji Sun.

Now that they are with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Colonel Qiliho said they would first undergo orientation before starting work.

Last week they were farewelled at their medal parade by the chief of staff of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), Colonel Jone Kalouniwai at Camp Ziouani.

The soldiers were supposed to leave on Monday, February 9 but there was a delay because of some issues between Lebanon and Israel.

Colonel Qiliho said the 146 soldiers would complete their term at the UNIFIL while the others would complete theirs at Golan Heights.

Fijian peacekeepers had been part of UNIFIL since 1978 and had pulled out in 2002. This redeployment was via a request the UN made to the Government.
