The iTaukei Affairs leaders led by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama want to correct any misconception on iTaukei issues today.

They will be at the Raiwaqa Basketball Court, in Suva, at 5.30pm and all Fijians are invited.

They also want to allay any fears or doubts about the iTaukei rights of ownership and protection of their land and resources.

Basically, they want to tell all iTaukei that their land, resources and culture including the chiefly system are safe.

The meeting is the first in a series that will be held in densely populated areas to explain Government policies on iTaukei.

Mr Bainimarama is understood to be concerned about the misinformation and lies being spread by some Opposition politicians on iTaukei issues.

They were the same issues that were used during last year’s general election campaign.

The Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Savenaca Kaunisela, said  this issue was absolutely  important for the PM.

That was why Mr Bainimarama, as Minister for iTaukei Affairs, would launch the iTaukei Awareness Progamme today.

Mr Kaunisela said they had planned and prepared for these meetings.

The objectives are:

n to reach the community and explain to the people what their roles or responsibilties are. Many iTaukei do not really understand what the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is or what it has been doing for the past years;

n to collect information and views from people, and use them to improve service delivery; and

n to tell the truth .

Mr Kaunisela said they would be meeting and talking to the iTaukei people and had urged them to make good use of this opportunity.

iTaukei institutions  that will be represented to help answer questions are: iTaukei Affairs Board, iTaukei Fund  Board, iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission, iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Centre of Appropriate Technology (CATD) in Nadave, Bau, Tailevu.

The next meetings will be at Nausori Village  on February 27; Kalabu Village Hall on March 13; Namosi Provincial Office on March 27. The meetings will be from 6pm to 8pm.
