The Fiji National University wants to involve more resorts in the Northern Division in their hospitality programme.

Overall, enrolments at the Fiji National University hospitality programme have been overwhelming.

The university’s National Training Productivity Centre deputy director executive management and hospitality services Satendra Nair said enrolment compared to last year had increased.

“In Nadi we have exceed our numbers and we have increased the enrolments compared to 2014,” Mr Nair said.

“In Nadi we have 200 enrolments in the hospitality programme and our Sigatoka centre which is only two year old has also grown and there are seventy students currently enrolled.

“The Nasese centre in Suva we have all four programmes for baking and pastry, cookery, front office and food and beverage running with an enrolment of around 50 students.”

He said in total the hospitality programme enrolment has grown by twenty per cent.

“Yes I think the demand in the industry has grown very high and employment is quite readily available.

“I expect the numbers to increase by next year again. FNU is trying to increase its resources in terms of its kitchens, bars and restaurants so that students have access to the best resources available.

The university would be concentrating on other parts on Vanua Levu as well for hospitality training.

“Apart from Labasa we are also targeting Savusavu and Taveuni we are going to run short training programmes for the industry.

“Especially for the method B employers, these are the small resorts and hotel operators who can’t afford to send their staff to Suva for training.

“We will facilitate and take such trainings to the resorts and hotels in Savusavu, Taveuni and other areas in the north where hospitality is booming.”

He added that the university would be hoping to expand next year.
