Bashir Khan, a Labasa-based businessman, will soon commence a timber joint venture with a businessman from New Zealand.

Mr Khan said there are hopes for business to begin in Kadavu later this year.

“My consultant has gone to Kadavu to inspect potential areas for the logging company,” Mr Khan said.

But before they begin the logging, Mr Khan said he wants to ensure his sawmill at Vunimoli in Labasa is operational. The Vunimoli Sawmill was an old sawmill.

He highlighted a $2 million upgrade was needed to improve the mill’s operations and production which could lead to more employment opportunities.

Vunimoli Sawmill was well known to produce a lot of timber.

Other investment

Meanwhile, Mr Khan is also currently working on a $2.5 million investment in a triple-storey shopping mall in Labasa.

The new mall which is expected to be completed by next year, will be built next to the NewWorld Supermarket building that he owns along Jaduram Street in Labasa.
