Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy yesterday spoke to students of Baulevu High School in Naitasiri on the importance of leadership.

He said students should learn at an early age about taking up leadership roles.

“In most ministries, when you go for a job interview and your employer sees that you were a prefect, you are already different from the other applicants,” Mr Reddy said.

He was trying to impress upon students the importance of taking up leadership roles early in life.

Mr Reddy was chief guest at the school’s prefect induction where 14 senior prefects, 20 class prefects including vocational prefects and six head prefects were inducted.

He urged parents to make good use of the Bainimarama Government’s free education and bus fare initiatives.

“This Government is very passionate about education and parents should send all their children to school,” he said.

Meanwhile headboy Malakai Vuli Lakoenailesilesi, said: “Being a leader is the challenging part but I will try my best to do my duties and keep up the school’s reputation,” he said.

Headgirl Neelam Bhan said she was happy but knew it would be tough.

“But I will need to be a role model to other students by showing good examples to them,” she said.
