A Fijian woman held in Malaysia on drug charges, and could face the death penalty, “is in good health”, says Ratu Meli Bainimarama.

The Fijian High Commissioner to Malaysia and his team have been visiting Christin Nirmal, 26, a mother of three from Narere in Nasinu, in the women’s prison in Kuala Lumpur.

She was caught at KL Airport with about 1.51 kilograms of methamphetamine allegedly found in her luggage.

Ratu Meli said: “Where Christin is held, there is a small canteen there and the Fijian authorities gave her some money so that she can buy some toiletries for her use.

“All her personal belongings are in the possession of the Malaysia authorities and will be with them till the matter is called before the Malaysian courts,” Ratu Meli said. After she was arrested, she was taken to the Detention Centre. Then she had a brief court appearance before being moved to the women’s prison. She is due to appear again on March 17.

Ms Nirmal went to Hong Kong after meeting a South African man on social networking site- Tagged.

Her mother, Nirmala Mariamm, in an earlier interview with the Fiji Sun had said her daughter went to Hong Kong where she spent around three weeks with the South African man. It is claimed that from Hong Kong, Ms Nirmal was given school bag samples by the South African man to take to Malaysia. It is alleged that the methamphetamine was in the sample bags.

Ratu Meli  has advised Fijians not to fall for such tricks.

“People need to be careful who they communicate with on the web. Fiji is not exempt from attempts by people wanting to take advantage. We need to be wary and not be vulnerable to such tactics,” Ratu Meli said.

Meanwhile, Ms Nirmal’s family has reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking assistance in getting her back to Fiji.

Malaysia has very strict anti-drug laws. The extreme penalty for attempting to import 1.5 kg or more of methamphetamine into the country is death.
