Conserving the Macuata dialect will be one of the main issues on the agenda at the Macuata Provincial Council meeting today.

Roko Tui Macuata Sitiveni Lalibuli said most children do not know how to speak the dialect.

“There will be a lot of emphasis on the importance of conserving one’s own dialect.

“One’s dialect depicts one’s culture, tradition and origin. It’s one thing we are known for that is unique to us,” he said.

Preparations for the Macuata Day celebrations will also be on the agenda.

The four-day celebrations scheduled for May 26th to 29th, 2015 is expected to involve 30 districts.

Plans are in place to hold an oratory contest in the Macuata dialect for students.

Men from the province will be encouraged to showcase their root crops while the woman, their traditional handicraft.

Meanwhile, the Macuata provincial council is already planning its 2017 budget as Government reforms continue to change attitudes towards planning and implementation.

The council meeting starts at 10am at the Kshatriya Hall at Naodamu in Labasa.

Representatives from more than 30 districts are expected to attend and contribute to discussions led by district chiefs.
