A rookie, under Government scholarship, has made a name for himself at the University of the South Pacific.

Sarvesh Kumar was presented USP’s Faculty of Science Technology and Environment’s 2014 Outstanding First Year Student Deans Award.

Mr Kumar was also awarded the 2014 Outstanding First Year Student in Physics.

The faculty held its Welcome and Awards Evening on Wednesday for its first year students of 2014 and 2015 at the Japan Pacific ICT Centre.

Mr Kumar said maintaining his scholarship kept him motivated throughout the year.

He was one of the 600 applicants from Year 13 who was awarded the Government-funded National Toppers Scheme (NTS) scholarship last year.

“It feels good to win this award but I wasn’t really expecting it because while others tried hard, I just do what I have to do to maintain my scholarship,” Mr Kumar said.

The 20-year-old said the award had now challenged him to better and maintain his performance.

“I will continue to do better because a lot of people expect me to, my parents, the faculty and the Tertiary Scholarship Loans Board (TSLB),” Mr Kumar said.

First year students also had the chance to be introduced to their peer mentors and staff student liaison committee during the event.
