The Ben Ryan-coached Vodafone Fijian 7s team aims to win the 2014/2015 World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series this season.

And they can only achieve that if the team win two tournaments starting with the Hong Kong 7s this weekend.

Ryan said they needed to tally 150 points to win the series and qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

South Africa currently leads the points with 96, New Zealand on 88, Fiji on 86 while Australia and England on 71, 68 respectively.

“If we need to win the series, we have to knock two tournaments, all other teams will be thinking the same,” Ryan said.

He said their number one priority as well was the top four spots for the Olympics.

“It is the hardest year in the history of the series to get into that top four with Australia and England scrambling below Fiji.”

He said two big performances should make sure that Fiji was safe in the top four.

Ryan admitted he understood how important Hong Kong 7s was for the people of Fiji.

“I understand that part, but for me it is important as any other tournament. I need to make sure we also perform well in Tokyo next week.

Ryan said that Fiji would take on Spain in a scrimmaging session on Wednesday. “I am not a big fan of it but the boys seem to love scrimmaging sessions before tournaments.

Message to fans

“We all are working hard and more teams will come home disappointed on Sunday. We don’t want to be one of them. We will concentrate in the match, the passes and communication in the field. No doubt by Friday afternoon we should have a team to be proud of.”

The team departed yesterday with France-based winger Samisoni Viriviri to join the team in Hong Kong.

The side is pooled with Canada, Samoa and Belgium. Fiji takes on Samoa in its opening pool match at 12:44am on Saturday.

Fiji faces Belgium on Saturday at 5.46pm, and Canada at 9.48pm.
