Eating a healthy diet is important to everyone. Healthy diet not only maintains good health and prevents disease but also helps to control or treats chronic diseases.

This week’s shopper shares another reason why a balanced diet is important. Akosita Valamalua, an employee of the Fiji Revenue Customs Authority (FRCA) says apart from keeping us healthy and wise, it also makes us wealthy.

As practiced by her family, Ms Valamalua said relying on vegetables for most of their meals is a healthy way for them to save.

She said stocking up on vegetables and fruits is a must for her when she is out to conduct their shopping.

“Vegetables are a must in our list since we hardly eat any meat during the week and not only is this healthy but we also find that this is one way we can save a cent or two although we do treat ourselves to takeouts sometimes,” she said.

Ms Valamalua conducts her shopping on a fortnightly basis and she does it on the weekend since she is always busy during the week. She lives with her husband and two daughters.

One will be surprised to find out that she spends only $200 on grocery shopping which includes vegetables and fruits but Ms Valamalua attributes it to the healthy or balance diets they always have.

“Normally we spend around $150 on grocery shopping and $50 on marketing, and in the next fortnight we try to top up the things that are needed in the house,” she said.

She does her shopping at New World Supermarket because it is closer to her home.

“We get our fruits and vegetables from there as well, but sometimes when some of the vegetables that we want is not there, we visit  the Raiwaqa market and we find that the prices are always affordable.”

To her family budget is something that we always keep track off especially when it comes to shopping.

She is advising other shoppers to always stock up on lots of fruits and vegetables and they should be included in our daily meals.

“Unhealthy diet is an important factor for almost all chronic diseases and for us at home eating a well balanced diet is important as it keeps us healthy, wealthy and wise,” she added.
