Rebuilding Schools Priority: Tagicakibau
Engineers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), are currently helping in the rehabilitation of two schools on Vanuatu’s main island, Efate.
The 30-member team has begun assessment work for the reconstruction of the school building and staff housing in Onesua Presbyterian College and Manua Centre School in north Efate.
Fiji response team leader in Vanuatu and Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau said the engineers were concentrating on the first phase of the clean-up and scoping works.
“The engineers have done an excellent job in clearing debris and we’re now conducting assessments on the construction needs of the schools and much of the teachers’ quarters have been completely damaged and most of the classrooms need new roofs,” Mr Tagicakibau said.
“The aim right now is to get the schools back up and running as soon as possible and we are willing to support this by constructing temporary shelters for classroom and staff housing.”
Mr Tagicakibau further said that the RFMF assistance is a partnership between the Fiji Response Team and the Vanuatu Government.
“We have provided manpower for these first few weeks of recovery,
but the equipment for building of temporary shelters and new buildings in these two schools will be procured through the relevant Vanuatu authorities,” he said.
The engineers are part of the 58-member Fiji response team in Vanuatu.
The team is expected to return next week.
