The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has made some changes to its time schedule for planting rice from day to night.

The time change was noted last Thursday night when a group of 15 corrections officers and 14 inmates were seen planting rice at Vaturekuka.

Corrections Commissioner, Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said they decided to plant rice at night because of the hot weather conditions in the North.

“When they work at night, they can plant more rice seedlings than during daylight. I see they have planted almost three acres even though the seedlings came late from Dreketi.”

Lieutenant- Colonel Vasu is thankful to those who assisted with the supply of rice seedlings to them.

“I very thankful to the farmers in North for assisting us in supplying rice seedlings,” he said.

“They are helping us because we have the manpower and the land to utilise for rice farming.

“It blends in well with Government‘s intention of reducing the importation of rice from overseas.”

He said Labasa has reached a stage where it has become self sufficient in terms of rice farming.

It is understood the idea behind the rice farming at Labasa is to help supply rice to the Corrections facilities in Suva.

Now with the new tractor along with the farming implements and manpower available they will be able to plant rice at the 17 acres of land at Vaturekuka.

A quad bike worth $17,000 is expected to be shipped over to the Labasa centre to be used also for the rice farming initiative.

The quad bike was bought through the services’ specialised vehicles 2014 budget.
