Members of the public are advised to monitor their children while enjoying the Easter weekend at various picnic spots around the country.

Water Safety Council (Fiji) Limited research, planning and implementation leader, Kathryn Murray said, “Children who are mobile are too young to recognise danger or get out of water. They are therefore at risk, especially in the absence of barriers and capable supervision.”

Ms Murray said 68 per cent of drowning last year occurred often mostly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“Most downing occurred in inland waterways – all were iTaukei who were primarily swimming or unsupervised.”

She said last year toddlers between one-year-old to five years accounted for 23 per cent of Fiji’s drowning – with more three-year olds drowning than any other ages.

“They were unsupervised, the council said.

The World Health Organisation said in 2014 drowning was the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide

The Fijian drowning toll stands at 11 compared to 18 for the same period last year.
