Fiji In Disaster Control Mode: Seruiratu

Fiji has always been ready to invest in disaster risk reduction, says the Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu.

He made the comment during the first National Disaster Management Council meeting conducted last week.

“We are among the most vulnerable and most affected because of the changing weather patterns while the severity of natural disasters continue to grow,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“While we made some progress in the past, concerted efforts are needed to allow us to better manage disaster and this is from the pre-disaster period to the post disaster period.”

He said Government had allocated $2m to the National Disaster Management Office which was the secretariat to the Council.

The Council meets at the end of each month.

Issues discussed at Meeting:

– National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) progressive report;

– Disaster climate mitigation fund board;

– PM’s Relief and Rehabilitation Fund;

– 2014 Prolonged dry spell;

– Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam 2015 report;

– Vanuatu/Fiji response team; and

– Amendment to the National Disaster Management Act 1998 and Plan 1995.
