The Office of the Commissioner Central plans to work with a group of businessmen from overseas willing to invest in dairy and beef farming in the Tailevu North area.

Commissioner Central Ratu Meleti Bainimarama said this came as quite a number of dairy farm leases are set to expire soon in the area.

Ratu Meleti made the comment while he was chief guest at the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting in Nausori yesterday.

He said this was one of the few plans in the pipeline by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, through his office.

“The proposal for new developments is trying to open up. We have one taskforce, we have rice.

“You would all know about Grace Food Express in Navua, Serua.

“They are trying to get land to lift their programmes from Serua to not only Tailevu, but to parts of the Rewa Delta,” he said.

“They are trying to move north so we hope to have a piece of land in the North of Tailevu with leases expiring to run this programme of rice replanting or rice revitalisation.”

Capital Projects

Ratu Meleti revealed that $17.3 million was used for capital projects within the province last year.

This includes projects by the various Government ministries.

He said these projects created more job opportunities for people within the province and were an added boost to the economy.

Ratu Meleti outlined that the new Nausori market and bus stand scheduled for opening next month opened doors for more development and investment for Nausori town.

He said there were plans in place to extend Nausori International Airport.

Ratu Meleti said all these developments would benefit Tailevu, Rewa and Naitasiri provinces and the country as a whole.

The Government last year allocated $131,817.14 to the Office of the Commissioner Central for development projects within Tailevu Province alone.
