Fiji Tongans Greet Pohiva
The Tongan Community in Fiji yesterday hosted the Tongan Prime Minister, Samiuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, to a church service at the Api Tonga Church in Laucala Bay, Suva.
The church’s chief steward, Kisione Finau, said they were grateful their leader, who just flew into the country last Saturday night, was able to join them during their church service yesterday.
“It’s a special day for us Tongans because we had our leader join us. Today (yesterday) is also a special day for our Sunday school children; it’s like our Palm Sunday. Across the world the first Sunday of May we dedicate it to our children,” Mr Finau said.
It was the first time that the community had hosted their leader away from their homeland.
He said Mr Pohiva expressed to them his gratitude for having the Tongan community here inviting him to be a part of their worship.
He said he was proud to be here in Fiji and added he would try to improve the Tongan church.
“I’m not making any promises but I assure you to look into the place and one day develop it and make it a place Tongans would be proud to be in,” Mr Finau said.
The church was built some years ago by the members of the community here in Suva.
He said they were also happy that Mr Pohiva was able to meet with the Tongan students studying at the University of the South Pacific before he left.
