The Lau Provincial Development Board has proposed that Government assistance to the province be provided on an equitable basis to its 22 islands, 13 districts and 72 villages.

The proposal was made during the board meeting in Suva on Tuesday.

Board member, food and nutrition scientist of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Dr Jimaima Lako said, after seeing  a presentation on assistance currently in place for Lau made by the office of the Commissioner Eastern Division, she saw an uneven distribution of assistance.

“If you really want us to actually contribute effectively and holistically to the development for Lau, it will be good for this forum to prepare a status quo of what the current status is for each island so that we know which island is getting what in terms of what criteria you are actually looking at to move Lau into equity level,” Dr Lako said.

She said some islands seem to be given more emphasis than others while some were ignored.

“We also need to critically look at the sustainability and the issues regarding the implementation of those programmes and projects,” she said.

Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu said this was part of Government’s vision to provide assistance equallyl, but more importantly to prioritise assistance and provide it first to those who were vulnerable and needed it most.

“But we will look into this proposal and work with the board to see how best this could be addressed,” Mr Moroivalu said.
