It was a triple celebration for Daiana Tukana, arguably Fiji’s oldest practising midwife, at the Suva Private Hospital yesterday.

Mrs Tukana, who has been a nurse for 50 years, was hosted to a 70th birthday party at the hospital. It was part of the hospital’s International Midwives Day and Mother’s Day celebrations.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun during the celebrations, Mrs Tukana said the secret behind her lengthy working life was that she was always happy while doing her work.

She said midwives needed to enjoy what they loved in order to live longer.

“You have to be happy,” Mrs Tukana said.

“I cannot just recall it how many babies I was able to deliver while being a midwife, but I know I have delivered so many because whenever I’ll be walking in town there will be ladies coming up to me and telling me to meet their child who I delivered.

“One of the best moments was when a mother came up to me and told me to meet her son, who I delivered 31 years ago,” she said.

Mrs Tukana graduated as a nurse in 1965 and became a registered midwife in 1986.

She served as a midwife for some years at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital before joining the Suva Private Hospital, where she has worked for the past 14 years.

The Suva Private Hospital’s Human Resources Administrator, Moushmi Bala, said Mrs Tukana had contributed immensely to the hospital over the years.

“She joined us when we opened doors to the public and she has been here for the past 14 years,” Ms Bala said.
