Shop and Save Athletics Fiji added another gold medal to their tally after winning the 800 metres senior medley on the second day of the 2015 Oceania Athletics Championships.

Fiji scooped the gold medal with the services of powerhouse quartet Banuve Tabakaucoro, Sisilia Seavula, Batinisavu Uluiyata and Younis Bese, clocking a time of 1:35.32 minutes, one second shy of the record set back in 2010 by a Fiji team that included Tabakaucoro.

This latest win comes on the back of positive news that Milika Tuivanuavou and Tabakaucoro qualified for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing China on August 21-30

Tuivanuavou topped the women’s senior 4kg shotput with a throw of 14.35 metres and scored her second gold medal in the women’s senior triple jump with a distance of 12.29 metres. Tabakaucoro met the qualifying time for the world meet despite coming second in the men’s senior 200 metres final.

In other events, lone long distance runner Ashneel Nand finished sixth in the 5000 metres with a time of 17:06.82 minutes, the event won by Australia’s Joshua Torley.

Natabua High School senior Uluiyata is the strong favourite to win the men’s senior 400 metres final today after clocking the best time in the preliminaries of 49.09 seconds, ahead of seasoned rivals like Australian Jayden Barmby, who clocked 49.75 seconds and Papua New Guinea’s Nelson Stone with a time of 49.98 seconds.

Bese will be going up against Pacific sprint queen Toea Wisil of Papua New Guinea in the women’s senior 100 metres final today. Tabakaucoro will face emerging rival Justin Dodson of Samoa in the men’s final.

The 2015 Oceania Athletics Championships ends today.
