Qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics is the ultimate goal for the Telecom Fijiana team,

It is important to work towards realistic goals, says coach Iliesa Tanivula.

The Telecom Fijiana mentor made the comment after the Vodafone Fijian 7s team qualified for the Rio Olympics at the 2015 Glasgow 7s last weekend.

“Of course, it would be fantastic if we could qualify for Rio at the end of this series. But we have to be realistic about what we can achieve in the time we have left,” Tanivula said from London yesterday.

“The ultimate goal is to make it to Rio but for us we’re just going to take it one step at a time and focus firstly on getting through this weekend. The aim is to try and stay in the top eight teams. We’re learning a lot though.

“If we don’t make the top four come the end of the series, we do have the Oceania Olympic qualifiers in November so that will be the next focus for us. But for now we’ll take it one step at a time.”

Tanivula said preparations had been relatively low key but going well.

“It’s been good so far and the girls have settled well. The weather hasn’t been too bad and though it’s a bit cold everyone has settled fine. We’re just looking forward to this weekend to get out on the field and play some rugby.

“We haven’t done much over the week because we’ve been trying to recover from the jet-lag. But we’ve got two scrimmage sessions today (last night) against South Africa and Canada. We’re just looking forward to this weekend.”

Fiji faces Australia in their first pool game at 11.44pm on Friday, USA at 2.50am on Saturday and their final match against China at 5.12am.
