The Vodafone Fijian Under-20 side kicked off their campaign at the 2015 World Rugby U20 Trophy with a bang defeating Portugal 34-19 in Lisbon, Portugal yesterday.

But coach Viliame Gadolo wasn’t happy about his team’s performance.

“We played below average,” Gadolo said.

“Portugal played as we expected, they came out firing and had a great game.”

Team captain Vatiliai Tuidraki dedicated the all Fijian mothers.

“I’m very happy that we won. Congratulations to Portugal for their great game. I want to dedicate this victory to all Fijian mothers, to whom we wish a happy Mother’s Day,” Tuidraki said.

Portugal captain Duarte Diniz admitted they were unable to execute their game plan.

“We had lots of heart, but lacked the calmness to get a different result. I’m happy for the display but the result failed to show what truly happened on the field,” Diniz said.

The hosts played well and created plenty of try-scoring opportunities. But in the first half only scored through the boot of fullback João Leitão who kicked two penalties and one drop goal to trail  the Fijian 19-9 at halftime.

Fiji showed their renowned handling skills as centres Kaveni Dabenaise and Tuidraki created two tries.

Portugal came through in the second half with a penalty to Leitão followed by their first try from winger Pedro Silvério. Fiji’s response was immediate as winger Filipo Daugunu kept them ahead with another try.

The Portuguese pushed hard in the last 20 minutes, but Daugunu sealed the win with a try. Fulltime:  34-19.

Fiji will play their second game against Georgia at 4am on Sunday.

Day One results: Uruguay 12-46 Georgia, Fiji 34-19 Portugal, Canada 35-20 Namibia, Tonga 35-16 Hong Kong.
