A highlighted topic of discussion during the first panel at the Fiji Institute of Accountants Congress yesterday was on women’s participation in businesses and boards.

Garment industry leader, Mark Halabe, stated: “Not until the system that is designed by men and for men is changed, women cannot reach their true potential.”

Diversity of views

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Dame Jenny Shipley’s response to women participation was women and men bring different views.

She said research had indicated that women are ahead of men in terms of conducting market research.

Dame Shipley, referring to post the Global Financial Crisis period, said those companies which had both men and women on boards, recovered faster because of the diversity.

“If you have women, there will be innovations,” she said.
