The Government will provide assistance to the Vodafone Fijian 7s team and Fiji Rugby Union ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

This was confirmed by Minister for Sports Laisenia Tuitubou while responding to a question raised by the Assistant Minister for Education Jilila Kumar, in Parliament yesterday.

Tuitubou said that the Government understood the fact that the Vodafone Fijians 7s team would need $3million in order to secure the gold medal in Rio. “The Vodafone 7s team has created history by qualifying for the Rio Olympics and Government will continue in supporting our team,” Tuitubou said.

“Preparing a team will cost $3million.” However, Tuitubou said the amount of money that the Government would be assisting them with would be finalised soon.

The Vodafone Fijian 7s team qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics last weekend at the Glasgow 7s in Scotland. Fiji will play Argentina in their opening match at 9pm tonight and will take on Samoa at 12.12am Sunday morning, followed by their last pool match against Canada at 3.18am.
